Everybody is aware of laser dentistry, right? But are they also aware of this “sleepy” procedure that many dentists are using today so that patients won’t feel any pains at all, as in, 100% pain-free and then, they can experience a relaxing and exciting (?) dental procedure? Well, it’s simply called sleep denistry. You see, going to the dentist can be painful and intimidating experience for most people.
So, these specialists have come up with this idea other than laser dentistry and sedation dentistry. But what’s the difference with sedation and sleep dentistry? The former is the use of sedatives to make the patient feel relaxed while the latter is completely putting him to sleep and he is not aware of what is going on. If you feel you are being unintentionally intimidated by your dentist, ask him about sleep denistry.
Sleep denistry can be also considered as sedation dentistry. It is a procedure where the dentist will sedate his patient with a combination of pain-relieving drugs and sedative drugs so that the patient won’t feel any pain while undergoing dental procedure such as tooth extraction. It is far much different from the usual anesthesia. This one will affect the whole body including the mind. The patient feels relaxed and anxiety-free and after the operation, he won’t have any recollection as to what has transpired.
But as of today, however, there are still a few dental clinics that are using this kind of treatment but the good news is, they are trying their best to include this on their list of services and they will expect higher number of patients. For some, this might be very expensive but as prices drop and the demand increases, it is expected that more and more dentists will offer this kind of services and more and more patients will enjoy the benefits of using sedation or sleep denistry for a painless and worry-free dental procedure.
However, the application of sleep denistry still lies on the decision of the patient. If he wants to be sedated, it should be done at least an hour before the actual procedure. And the amount of sedative drugs and pain relievers depends upon different factors: the person’s present state of health and/or the extent or the area to be treated.
It is also very important that the patient should have knowledge of his medical records, trying to find out if he has any underlying diseases or restrictions for certain drugs. He should also consult his personal physician prior to undergoing sleep denistry to find out if he is qualified for such procedure or not.
I'd rather know that I am being operated on than pass out the whole time on a dentist's table without knowing what happened. The dentist visit is one of the few experiences in our lives which, for some, may be excruciating or bothersome at first. But once their teeth problems have been solved, they are so happy they can smile about it. That's the rewarding experience I'm talking about!
